Fortnite is giving back $245 million to players  because The FTC(Federal Trade Commission) alleged that Epic used deceptive tactics that drove users to make unwanted purchases in the multiplayer shooter game. The FTC also said that Epic violated a landmark federal children’s privacy law.

 Players of Fortnite can now apply for a share of the $245 million FTC settlement.

The $245 million settlement that Fortnite’s developer, Epic Games, agreed to pay as part of a deal with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), is now available to be claimed by millions of players.

The FTC claimed that Epic employed misleading strategies to persuade players to spend money they did not intend to in the multiplayer shooter game. 

The FTC also charged Epic with breaking a historic federal law protecting the privacy of children.

While denying any wrongdoing, Epic Games consented to a settlement in order to forgo further legal action.

Who is qualified to receive the settlement?

Anyone who was harmed by Epic’s dishonest actions between January 2017 and September 2022 is eligible for the payment. This comprises:

Users who had their accounts deactivated after complaining to their credit card company about erroneous payments

  •  Users who were charged in-game cash for products they didn’t want. 
  •  Parents whose children used their credit cards to make Fortnite purchases without their consent.
